Animals in Space

Animals in Space Did you know that the first astronauts were not humans but animals? In 1957, a dog from the U.S.S.R. (today it’s called Russia) became the first creature ever sent into space. Her name was Laika. Laika did not survive the journey, but Sam the monkey did, just two years later. Then a chimpanzee named Enos became the first creature to actually orbit Earth in 1961. The United States and the U.S.S.R. sent a series of animals into space throughout the 1970s. The animals included rats, frogs, fruit flies, and newts. © Advanced Assessment Systems/LinkIt!™ Passage provided under license from Use and duplication is restricted to licensees only.
