HowHareLostaRace ThistraditionalstoryistoldbytheSwazipeople ofsouthernAfrica. HareoftenteasedTortoiseaboutbeingslow.Oneday,hechallenged Tortoisetoracetosometreesabout500yardsaway. Tortoisewastiredofbeingteased.Sohesaid,“Whyrunsuchashort race?Let’sracetothelakethat’saboutsixmilesfromhere.I’llneedtimeto practice,solet’sstartourracefivedaysfromnow,atmidday.” HarewassosurprisedbyTortoise’sresponsethatheagreedtorunthe longerrace. Atonce,Tortoisewenttohisrelativesandaskedfor theirhelpwithaplan.ThenTortoisestartedoutfor thelake.Ittookhimalmostfivedaystogetthere. Atmiddayonraceday,Harearrivedatthestarting lineandmetthetortoisethere.Theracebegan.Hare spedaheadatonceandcontinuedrunning.Ashe reachedthetopofahill,hesawwithamazementthat thetortoisewaswalkingalongthedownhillroadjust ahead! Harespedupandpassedthetortoise.Soonthere wasanotherhill.Hareraceduptheslopeandstarteddownthe otherside—andtherewasthetortoiseagain! Harewasnowrunningsofastthathecouldn’tthink.Yetnomatter howmanytimeshepassedthetortoise,hesoonsawhimagainonthe roadahead. Thelakewasnowjustyardsaway,butHarewassotiredthathe collapsedandcouldn’tgoanyfarther.TherestoodTortoiseatthe finishline. TortoisebroughtHareacupofwater.“Here,drinkthis,”saidTortoise. “AndIhopeyouwon’tbemakingfunofanytortoisesfromnowon.” Tortoiseneverboastedabouthiswin,butHarealwaysrememberedit.
